? ??The Chancellor surprised the warehouse and the property industries by announcing in his 2007 budget speech sweeping changes to the rules relating to the liability of empty property for the payment of rates. Whilst these changes affect all classes of property the impact is likely to be greatest in the warehouse sector which has until now been exempt from any liability for rates. ?

? ??This will change from April 2008 when anyone entitled to possession of an empty warehouse will be entitled to a six month rate free window following which they will have to 100% of the occupied rate liability. We have had to wait until mid-December for the Department for Communities and Local Government to publish the outcome of a consultation process which followed this announcement to learn how these rules will be applied from 1st April 2008 onwards.?
